UP Joins Hands with Tata Technologies for Advanced Courses in 149 ITIs

Industry 4.0 Push to Make Uttar Pradesh India's Skill Capital

Lucknow | June 28, 2026 : The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a major step to modernize technical education by approving UP Tata Technologies Advanced Courses in 149 Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and the State Staff Training and Research Centre (SSTRC), Aliganj, Lucknow. The initiative aims to prepare students for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, robotics, automation, and digital technologies.

The decision builds upon the long-term partnership between the Uttar Pradesh government and Tata Technologies, which began in 2023 to transform government ITIs into Industry 4.0 technology hubs.

UP Government Strengthens Industry 4.0 Skill Development

The new approval focuses on operating nine advanced technology courses that match the needs of modern industries. The state government believes these courses will improve employability and help create a skilled workforce for both Indian and global companies.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Vocational Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Kapil Dev Agarwal, said the initiative will prepare youth according to international industrial standards. He added that the courses move beyond conventional vocational education and focus on technologies shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

What Is the UP Tata Technologies Advanced Courses Initiative?

The UP Tata Technologies Advanced Courses project is part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader plan to transform government ITIs into modern technology hubs.

The partnership was originally signed through a 10-year Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Uttar Pradesh government and Tata Technologies in February 2023. Under that agreement, around 150 government-owned ITIs across all 75 districts were selected for modernization with advanced laboratories, digital classrooms, industry-standard software, and modern equipment.

The current approval enables these upgraded institutes to begin operating advanced technology trades with dedicated instructors and workshop staff.

Nine Advanced Courses to Be Offered

Students enrolling in the upgraded ITIs will receive training in emerging technologies that industries increasingly demand.

The approved courses include:

  • Electric Vehicle Mechanic
  • Industrial Robotics and Digital Manufacturing Technician
  • Advanced CNC Machining Technician
  • Manufacturing Process Control and Automation
  • Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) Technician
  • Additive Manufacturing Technician (3D Printing)
  • CAM Programmer
  • Basic Designer and Virtual Verifier (Mechanical)
  • Artisan Using Advanced Tools

These programmes combine classroom learning with practical industrial training to make students job-ready from day one.

Recruitment of 1,065 Skilled Personnel Approved

To operate these advanced programmes efficiently, the state government has approved the appointment of 1,065 professionals through outsourcing.

The recruitment includes:

  • 171 Workshop Instructors
  • 894 Instructors

All appointments will take place through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) under the Outsourcing of Services model.

Officials said the service provider agency will be selected through an independent, transparent, and competitive process that follows government rules. The Directorate of Training will determine the qualifications and eligibility criteria for each post.

Building on a ₹4,887 Crore Modernization Programme

The latest decision is part of a much larger modernization programme launched in 2023.

Under the original agreement:

  • About ₹4,887 crore was earmarked for upgrading government ITIs.
  • Around 10,000 square feet of infrastructure is being developed at each institute.
  • Modern laboratories, advanced software, and digital learning facilities are being installed.
  • Students gain exposure to industrial-grade machines and equipment.

The project aims to bridge the gap between classroom education and industrial requirements.

Courses Designed Around Industry 4.0 Technologies

Unlike traditional vocational education, these programmes focus on technologies driving modern manufacturing.

Training areas include:

Electric Vehicles

Students will learn EV servicing, maintenance, battery systems, and diagnostics.

Robotics and Automation

Industrial robots, automated manufacturing systems, and smart production processes form a major part of the curriculum.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Students will work with connected industrial devices and digital monitoring systems.

Additive Manufacturing

Training includes modern 3D printing technologies used in manufacturing and product development.

CNC Manufacturing

Learners will operate advanced computer-controlled machining systems used by precision industries.

These technologies are widely used in automobile, aerospace, electronics, defence, heavy engineering, and smart manufacturing sectors.

Better Employment Opportunities for UP Youth

The government expects the programme to improve employment prospects significantly.

Graduates will be able to pursue careers in:

  • Automobile manufacturing
  • Electric vehicle industry
  • Robotics
  • Aerospace
  • Smart factories
  • Digital manufacturing
  • Industrial automation
  • Precision engineering
  • Electronics manufacturing

Officials believe the new skill ecosystem will also help students find overseas employment opportunities where Industry 4.0 skills remain in high demand.

Tata Technologies Brings Industry Expertise

Tata Technologies specializes in engineering, product development, and digital transformation for global manufacturing companies.

The company is helping develop:

  • Industry-focused curriculum
  • Modern laboratories
  • Advanced software
  • Faculty training
  • Industrial equipment
  • Digital learning systems

Its experience with international manufacturers allows ITI students to learn technologies already used in modern factories.

Earlier Vision to Transform ITIs into Technology Hubs

When the partnership was announced in 2023, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described it as a major step toward making Uttar Pradesh a preferred manufacturing destination.

Officials said upgraded ITIs would not only train students but also serve as technology centres for industries and MSMEs across the state. The facilities were designed to support sectors such as:

  • Product Design
  • AI-based Manufacturing
  • Virtual Verification
  • PLC and SCADA Automation
  • Battery Electric Vehicle Technology
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Agriculture Technology
  • Digital Instrumentation
  • Modern Automotive Maintenance

The centres are expected to strengthen both industrial productivity and local entrepreneurship.

Why This Matters for Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has one of India’s largest youth populations. However, industries increasingly require workers with expertise in automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital manufacturing.

By introducing the UP Tata Technologies Advanced Courses, the state hopes to:

  • Reduce the skill gap.
  • Increase youth employability.
  • Support manufacturing investments.
  • Strengthen MSMEs.
  • Attract global industries.
  • Build an Industry 4.0-ready workforce.

The initiative also aligns with the state’s broader objective of becoming a leading manufacturing and investment destination.

The Road Ahead

The approval of advanced courses marks the operational phase of one of India’s largest public-private skill development partnerships.

Once fully implemented, students across Uttar Pradesh will receive industry-standard technical education that reflects current manufacturing practices rather than outdated vocational models.

If successfully executed, the UP Tata Technologies Advanced Courses initiative could become a benchmark for Industry 4.0 skill development in India and help transform Uttar Pradesh into a major hub for advanced technical talent.
