Lucknow | 11, July 2025 : The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a new travel allowance scheme for students. This will help students who live far from government secondary schools. They will get ₹6,000 every year to cover their travel costs.
What is the UP Travel Allowance Scheme?
Many students in UP live far from schools. Some walk long distances every day. This new scheme will help them reach school easily. Students in classes 9 to 12 who live five kilometres or more away from the nearest government secondary school will get this help.
Where Will the Scheme Be Implemented?
The scheme will cover six districts in Bundelkhand:
- Jhansi
- Chitrakoot
- Jalaun
- Hamirpur
- Mahoba
- Banda
Sonbhadra district is also included. Plus, girl students in 146 government schools under the PM SHRI Yojana can get the allowance too.
Why This Scheme is Important
Solving the Distance Problem
Many students drop out because schools are too far. Some families can’t afford daily travel costs. This allowance will help families pay for transport. It will make sure children go to school every day.
Money Sent Directly
The ₹6,000 will be sent straight to the student’s bank account. This will happen through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This keeps the process simple and clear.
Who Can Get the Allowance?
Who is Eligible?
- Students must be in class 9 to 12.
- Their home must be 5 km or more from the nearest government secondary school.
- They must live in one of the chosen districts.
- Girl students in PM SHRI schools are also included.
What Documents Are Needed?
Students must fill out a form. The form says no government school is within 5 km of their home. The village head and school principal will check the form in villages. In cities, local councillors will check it.
How to Keep Getting the Money
Students must have good attendance. They must increase attendance by at least 10% compared to last term. If they do not attend school, they will not get the allowance again.
When Will Students Get the Money?
The Secondary Education Department has made all plans. The first payment will reach students by September 5, 2025.
What Officials Are Saying
“This is the first time such a step is being taken. It will not only improve attendance but will also help in lowering the dropout rate,”
— Vishnu Kant Pandey, Additional State Project Director, Samagra Shiksha Madhyamik
How Many Students Will Get the Benefit?
- About 24,000 students in Bundelkhand and Sonbhadra will get help.
- Around 4,000 girl students in PM SHRI schools will also get money for travel.
How Will This Help Families?
Reduces Financial Stress
Families in villages do not always have money for travel. Many students walk long distances. This scheme will cover the cost of buses or other transport.
Supports Girls’ Education
For girls, distance can be unsafe. Many parents stop sending girls to school if it is too far. This allowance will help more girls complete their studies.
Fewer Dropouts
The money will remove a big reason why students drop out. It will help them finish their schooling.
