Torrent Power Starts UP’s First Green Hydrogen Plant in Gorakhpur
Torrent Power launches UP’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, blending clean fuel into homes, industries, and CNG supply

Lucknow | 18, August 2025 : UP’s first green hydrogen plant began operations in Gorakhpur on August 17, 2025. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath opened the pilot project. The plant was built by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas. It is only the second such plant in India.
Capacity and Fuel Blending
The plant will make 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year. A part of this supply will mix into the existing gas system. Up to 2% of green hydrogen will blend with CNG and PNG. This mix will go to homes, factories, and CNG stations in Gorakhpur.
How the Plant Works
The plant uses electrolysis powered by renewable energy. This means hydrogen is made without burning fossil fuels. The gas then travels through Torrent’s city gas network. It reaches 12,000 households, 73 industries, and 32 CNG stations in and around Gorakhpur.
Government Plans
Uttar Pradesh has a Green Hydrogen Policy 2024. The goal is to make 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen every year by 2028. This project also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission 2030. Both plans focus on lowering carbon emissions and creating cleaner fuel.
What Leaders Said
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called green hydrogen the fuel of the future. He said blending it with PNG will bring clean fuel to kitchens and homes. He added that costs will drop over time, much like how mobile phones became cheaper.
Jinal Mehta, Director of Torrent Group, said the project matches Prime Minister Modi’s clean energy vision. He called the Gorakhpur plant a key step in building India’s hydrogen future.
Why It Matters
Blending green hydrogen with city gas reduces the use of imported fuels. It also lowers carbon emissions. At the same time, it creates demand for hydrogen at an early stage. Using the existing gas system keeps costs low and makes the transition smoother.
