Lucknow | 9 January, 2026 : India, the world’s largest milk producer, contributes nearly 25 percent of global milk production. Now, the sector is entering a new phase. Led by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the dairy ecosystem is rapidly becoming modern, connected, and farmer-centric.

National Digital Livestock Mission: The Core of Change

The biggest milestone under this transformation has come from the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM).

Under the mission, more than 35.68 crore animals have been given a 12-digit unique digital identity called ‘Pashu Aadhaar’. This single identity links health records, vaccination history, breeding data, and treatment details on one platform.

As a result, livestock management has become fully trackable and data-based. So far, over 84 crore digital transactions have been recorded under this system.

Empowering Farmers Through Digital Access

To support livestock owners directly, NDLM has introduced the 1962 mobile app along with a toll-free number (1962).

Through this service, farmers can:

• Request mobile veterinary units from home
• Access verified information on government schemes
• Receive timely animal healthcare support

Therefore, veterinary services are no longer limited by distance or delay.

Automatic Milk Collection System: Transparency at the Grassroots

To strengthen dairy cooperatives, NDDB has rolled out the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS).

This system digitally records:

• Milk quantity
• Quality and fat content
• Real-time payment calculations

Payments are transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts. Currently, AMCS operates in over 26,000 dairy cooperative societies across 12 states and UTs. It benefits 17.3 lakh milk producers linked to 54 milk unions.

Thus, trust and accuracy at the village level have improved significantly.

NDDB Dairy ERP: From Cow to Consumer

For end-to-end management, NDDB has implemented the NDDB Dairy ERP (NDERP) system.

This web-based platform integrates:

• Procurement and sales
• Accounting and production
• Human resources and logistics

When integrated with AMCS, the entire value chain—from cow to consumer—becomes digital. Consequently, decision-making has turned faster and more efficient.

Strengthening Breeding and Animal Health Systems

Digital platforms such as the Semen Station Management System (SSMS) and INAPH are improving animal breeding, nutrition, and health services.

At present, 38 graded semen stations use these systems. This has strengthened the artificial insemination network and improved quality standards nationwide.

i-DIS: Building a National Dairy Database

To promote data-driven decisions, the Internet-based Dairy Information System (i-DIS) has been developed.

Currently connected are:

• 198 milk unions
• 29 marketing dairies
• 15 dairy federations

Together, they are building a strong and reliable national dairy database. Hence, policy planning and monitoring have become more accurate.

Smarter Milk Transport With GIS Technology

Milk transportation has also become more efficient through GIS-based milk route optimization.

This technology reduces:

• Transportation time
• Fuel costs
• Operational losses

Positive results have already been seen in Varanasi, Jharkhand, Indore, and Western Assam.
