CM Yogi Adityanath celebrates tradition and sportsmanship at the Uttar Pradesh Kesari Wrestling Championship in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur | 30, July 2025 : Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended the closing ceremony of the Uttar Pradesh Kesari Wrestling Championship in Gorakhpur. The event took place during the Nag Panchami festival and welcomed over 300 wrestlers from across the state.

Wrestlers Awarded in Three Major Categories

CM Yogi presented cash prizes, certificates, and traditional maces (gada) to the winners. Awards were given in three title categories:

  • Uttar Pradesh Kesari (Above 80 kg): ₹1.01 lakh (1st), ₹51,000 (2nd), ₹21,000 (3rd)
  • Uttar Pradesh Kumar (60–80 kg): ₹1 lakh (1st), ₹51,000 (2nd), ₹21,000 (3rd)
  • Veer Abhimanyu (55–60 kg): ₹51,000 (1st), ₹25,000 (2nd), ₹11,000 (3rd)

The Chief Minister praised the players and said that all 300 participants deserve recognition.

The Chief Minister said this wrestling event has grown beyond tradition. Earlier, only local youth joined the contest. Now, wrestlers aiming for a career in sports are also competing.

CM Yogi spoke about the old Indian belief: “A healthy body is the first step to fulfilling one’s duties.” He said people should follow a disciplined lifestyle and take part in sports.

Strong Support Through Policies and Infrastructure

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has seen big changes in sports in the last 11 years. Programs like Khelo India and MP Sports Competitions have given new chances to youth.

CM Yogi said Uttar Pradesh has performed well in events like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. Over the past 8 years, the state has:

  • Built more stadiums and sports grounds
  • Improved training and facilities
  • Honored top athletes in public events
  • Given government jobs to over 500 athletes

Uttar Pradesh now leads the country in giving jobs to medal winners under its sports policy.

Better Facilities and More Opportunities

CM Yogi shared that now even villages have sports fields. Mini stadiums have been set up at block level, and full stadiums at the district level. Youth groups and women’s groups have received sports kits too.

He also spoke about UP Police’s success at the World Police Championship. The team ranked 1st in India and 3rd in the world. He said that when youth get encouragement, they perform at their best.

CM Yogi said that Nag Panchami celebrates both physical and spiritual power. It reminds us that all living beings deserve respect. Worshiping snakes on this day shows how Indian culture values every life in the universe.
