IGI Launches Light Performance Analysis at IIJS 2025

A science-backed tool that reveals the true sparkle, fire, and contrast of diamonds beyond the traditional 4Cs

Mumbai | 1, August 2025 : The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has launched a new tool called Light Performance analysis. It helps people understand how a diamond shines. The launch took place at the IIJS Premiere, a top jewelry event in India.

John Pollard, IGI’s Education Head from the USA, led the session. He showed how the tool works and why it matters.

What Is Light Performance Analysis?

This new tool looks at how a diamond reacts to light. It gives a main score and three smaller scores:

  • Brightness – white light that bounces back
  • Fire – flashes of color
  • Contrast – mix of light and dark areas

These scores are shown in the Light Performance Report. The report also includes a special image made with light-tracking software. This shows how light moves through the diamond.

One special test checks contrast from 40 cm away. That’s how people usually see a diamond in real life.

Why Is This Important?

Some diamonds look the same on paper but not in person. They may have the same cut, color, clarity, and carat (4Cs). But they shine differently. This new analysis shows those hidden differences.

Retailers can use it to tell better stories. Buyers can use it to choose better diamonds. It helps both sides.

Tehmasp Printer, IGI’s CEO, said, “This is the real beauty of a diamond. It’s now measured with science. It helps people trust what they see.”

For All Diamonds

This service works for both natural and lab-grown diamonds. It is only given to stones that score “Exceptional.” IGI will also offer it for diamonds graded by other labs.

Pollard added, “This helps link what jewelers see with what buyers see. People love the sparkle and flashes. Now, we can measure those things clearly.”
