Gorakhpur’s Rapid Rise in Swachh Bharat Rankings Shows How Cleanliness and Smart Planning Can Transform a City

Lucknow | 23, July 2025 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared great news for the people of Gorakhpur. Thanks to the Gorakhpur Cleanliness Drive, the city has secured 4th place in India’s Swachh Bharat Survey for cities with a 3 to 10 lakh population. Just three years ago, it stood at 74th rank, then jumped to 22nd, and now proudly holds the 4th spot.
Aiming Higher: Next Goal Is Top Three
During the Safai Mitra Safe City Honour Ceremony at the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation, CM Yogi set a bigger goal. He urged everyone to push harder so that Gorakhpur’s cleanliness ranking reaches the top three in India next time. According to him, teamwork and dedication have made this success possible.
Safai Mitras and Councillors Get Awards
To recognise this hard work, selected councillors and cleaning workers were honoured for their role in the Gorakhpur Cleanliness Drive. Moreover, the CM gave out symbolic cheques under the Safai Mitra Welfare Fund. He also flagged off 12 new sanitation vehicles that will help keep the city cleaner.
Over ₹253 Crore Projects Launched
Alongside this, CM Yogi launched and laid the foundation stone for 177 development projects worth ₹253 crore. Significantly, he also inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first Urban Flood Management Cell and Early Warning System. This new system will use technology to monitor drains and prevent blockages and waterlogging.
Solid Waste Management Model and Short Films
Additionally, the CM reviewed a model of the Integrated Solid Waste Management System in Suthni Bhiti Rawat. Short films highlighting the Gorakhpur Cleanliness Drive and the new flood cell were also shown during the event. These films inspired people to stay committed to keeping the city clean.
A City Transformed: From Messy to Modern
Once known for mosquitoes, mafias, and filthy streets, Gorakhpur is transforming fast. Many old problems are now under control. Because citizens supported wider roads and better drains, the city now looks cleaner and works better. As a result, Gorakhpur has become a good example of urban development.
Urban Flood Cell to Tackle Waterlogging
To solve flooding problems, the new Urban Flood Management Cell will help monitor drains like the Godhoiya drain. It will give early warnings so waterlogging can be avoided during heavy rain. Better drainage means cleaner and safer streets for everyone.
Digital Library and Animal Birth Control Centre
A new digital library has opened at the Municipal Corporation. Even former councillors can use this library. Meanwhile, an Animal Birth Control Centre has started in Gulharia to control stray dogs and monkeys. Besides this, Ramgarh Tal, now a growing tourist spot, has been beautified under Phase-2 work worth ₹35.41 crore.
Healthy Competition to Keep Wards Clean
CM Yogi stressed the need for healthy competition among wards. He said the best councillors and cleaning committees should get rewards. In addition, door-to-door awareness campaigns should teach people not to dump waste on roads. Such steps will strengthen the Gorakhpur Cleanliness Drive.
Cleanliness Is the Key to a Developed India
While speaking about India’s future, the CM said cleanliness, health, modern services, and technology will help achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047. He thanked everyone for their hard work in making Gorakhpur shine.
Many Big Projects Also Started
Several other important projects were launched on this occasion. These include:
- New roads, drains, and sewers in various wards.
- Internal roads and sewers at the Waste Processing City in Suthni.
- New zonal offices at Transport Nagar and Ranidiha.
- Beautification of Lal Diggi Park.
- Construction of a 75-bed Working Women’s Hostel at Siktaur.
- A global complex and co-working space at Transport Nagar Crossing.
- Road widening from Nakha Overbridge to Hadahwa Phatak Road via Ramjanaki Nagar Crossing.
Better Use of Public Money
The CM reminded officials that taxpayers’ money should be used wisely. He made it clear that there should be no compromise on the quality of development work.
Special Blessings on Shivratri
Before the ceremony, CM Yogi offered Rudrabhishek at Mansarovar Temple. He also wished everyone a happy Shravan Shivratri and thanked the people of Gorakhpur for their support.
