Ganga Pathway Project : New Push to Stop Sewage Flow and Add Walkway

Ganga Pathway Project aims to stop untreated sewage, build ducts, and create a clean pedestrian walkway along the river

Lucknow | 24, July 2025 : Despite huge spending over the years, untreated drainage still flows into the Ganga. Now, the government has launched a fresh plan to tackle this. The new Ganga pathway project aims to divert sewage to treatment plants and build a safe path for people to walk along the river.

Fresh Orders to Build 12-Km Ganga Pathway

The Chief Secretary has approved a proposal to build a 12-kilometre pathway from the Ganga Barrage to Jajmau. This stretch is just the start of the larger Ganga pathway project. The Namami Gange Department will prepare the detailed plan. Once ready, the path will stop sewage from flowing directly into the river.

Long-Pending Idea Gets Fresh Life

Interestingly, this is not a new plan. Back in 2014, a similar idea came up during a high-level meeting led by the then Chief Secretary. At that time, leaders from 18 departments discussed building a continuous path from Haridwar to Ballia. But the plan never took off.

New Instructions to Make It Happen

Recently, Neeraj Srivastava, Coordinator of the Divisional High-Level Development Committee, met the Chief Secretary again. As a result, the government gave fresh instructions to prepare the Ganga pathway project in line with the proposed Ganga Path. Now, the Namami Gange Department will work with other teams to get the plan ready.

How the Ganga Pathway Will Work

This time, the plan includes a smart solution. The pathway will have underground ducts. These ducts will carry drainage water to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). This will stop dirty water from going straight into the Ganga.

Clean River, Better Walkway for All

The project does two things at once. First, it protects the Ganga from sewage. Second, it creates a clean, safe walkway for people to enjoy the riverfront. If done right, the Ganga pathway project will help keep the holy river clean for future generations.

Next Steps

The Namami Gange Department will soon hire experts to design the pathway. After that, work will begin to build ducts, connect them to STPs, and create a proper pedestrian path. Officials hope the new plan will succeed where older ones failed.

Final Word

The government’s push for the Ganga pathway project shows that cleaning the Ganga is still a top goal. With better planning and teamwork, this plan could finally fix the sewage problem and give people a beautiful riverfront to walk along.
