One District One River Programme Brings Lost Rivers Back to Life in UP

Community Efforts Restore Dying Rivers

Lucknow | 19, July 2025 : Uttar Pradesh is seeing real change through the One District One River Programme. Two rivers — the Suaon in Balrampur and the Tedhi in Bahraich — are flowing again. Local people joined hands with officials to make this possible.

Suaon River Flows Again After Decades

Earlier, the Suaon river stayed blocked for years. Locals knew it as Suaon Nullah. Now, thanks to strong planning under the One District One River Programme, its revival is on track. DM Pawan Agarwal shared that 49 spots were chosen for work. Already, people have finished tasks at 25 locations, and plans for the rest are ready.

Moreover, MNREGA helped create thousands of jobs. So far, workers have finished over 13,700 man-days of work out of a target of 45,747. Desilting, plantation, and cleaning made this success possible.

Tedhi River Gets a Fresh Start

Similarly, Bahraich’s Tedhi river is getting a new life. DM Monika Rani explained how neglect ruined its flow for years. However, locals stepped up to clear waste and silt. They used machines and manual work to reopen the path for water. Meanwhile, forest teams planted trees to green up the riverbanks.

Drain Repairs and Plantation Drive Boost River Health

To keep rivers clean, the nagar palika parishad fixed drains quickly. This prevents silt from blocking the rivers again. At the same time, new plantations help restore balance and make the area green.

Four Districts Focus on River Rescue

Devipatan division commissioner Shashi Bhushan Lal Sushil said four districts are working together. They aim to protect rivers from dying out under the One District One River Programme. Local support has become the backbone of this success.

One District One River Programme: A Model for India

Clearly, the One District One River Programme shows how teamwork, good planning, and people’s help can revive nature. Rivers that were lost are now flowing again — and the green cover is coming back too.
