UP Skill Development Initiative Empowers Youth with Modern Tech and Traditional Skills

Lucknow | 28, June 2025 : The Uttar Pradesh government is making landmark strides in youth skill development by offering high-quality training in cutting-edge sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, and Data Analysis. Alongside modern skills, the initiative strengthens traditional sectors like agriculture and handicrafts, ensuring holistic growth for the state’s workforce.
Global Training and International Collaboration
As part of its UP Skill Development vision, the government is partnering with top national and international institutions and industry experts. Selected youth may even get the opportunity to train abroad for specialised courses, boosting their global employability.
This major push follows World Bank President Ajay Banga’s praise of Uttar Pradesh’s manufacturing potential during his meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Building on this momentum, the state is modernising its Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in collaboration with the Tata Group.
Modernising ITIs and Polytechnic Colleges
Upgraded Infrastructure for Modern Skill Training
So far, 149 government ITIs have been modernised, with ongoing work in 60 more. Now, the government is expanding this modernisation to polytechnic institutes. In the first phase, 45 polytechnic colleges have been selected to receive modern machinery and introduce new courses in AI, Robotics, and other emerging technologies.
AI Pragya Programme: 10 Lakh Youth to Benefit
The AI Pragya programme is a flagship initiative under UP Skill Development, aiming to train 10 lakh youth in advanced digital technologies. This large-scale digital literacy drive is expected to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position as an innovation hub.
UP Agri Yojana: Modernising Agriculture
Training Farmers for a Smarter Future
Under the UP Agri Yojana, supported by the World Bank, the state plans to modernise agriculture in Bundelkhand and Eastern UP. Over 10 lakh farmers will receive productivity-focused training, while 500 farmers will be sent abroad for advanced agricultural education.
These programmes are jointly run by key departments, including Agriculture, Education, Health, Rural Development, and Revenue.
Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana & Self Employment Sangam Yojana
Through the Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana, traditional artisans have benefited from training and toolkits, with over 3.68 lakh artisans gaining support. The Self Employment Sangam Yojana has also trained more than 22,000 youth, strengthening self-employment opportunities across the state.
Impact So Far: Youth Skill Development in Numbers
According to official data:
- 25 lakh youth have been trained through ITIs and the Skill Development Mission.
- 10.20 lakh youth have secured employment.
- Over 96 lakh MSME units now benefit from a workforce aligned with industry demands.
Aligning Skills with MSME Needs
Recognising the evolving needs of over 96 lakh MSMEs, the UP government aims to align its UP Skill Development programmes with modern industry requirements. This ensures that the state’s youth are job-ready for both traditional and emerging sectors.
