UP Defence Industrial Corridor to Attract ₹25,000 Crore More Investment, Create 22,000 Jobs

Uttar Pradesh Strengthens India's Defence Manufacturing Ambitions

Lucknow | June 30, 2026 : The UP Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) is entering a new phase of growth. The corridor is expected to attract an additional ₹25,000 crore in investments and create 20,000–22,000 direct jobs over the next five years. The expansion will strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position as one of India’s fastest-growing defence manufacturing hubs while supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Officials say the new investment target is realistic because several defence manufacturing units have already become operational, while many more are under construction. As a result, the corridor is rapidly evolving into a major centre for aerospace, defence systems, missiles, ammunition, drones, and advanced manufacturing.

What is the UP Defence Industrial Corridor?

The UP Defence Industrial Corridor is a flagship initiative of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Announced in 2018, the project aims to reduce India’s dependence on defence imports, promote indigenous manufacturing, and build a globally competitive defence ecosystem under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat programmes.

The project is being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) across six strategic nodes:

  • Lucknow
  • Kanpur
  • Jhansi
  • Aligarh
  • Agra
  • Chitrakoot

These locations have been selected because they offer excellent connectivity through expressways, rail networks, and industrial infrastructure.

₹25,000 Crore Fresh Investment Planned

New Expansion Will Create Thousands of Jobs

According to Colonel Sanjay Singh, Chief General Manager of the UP Defence Industrial Corridor, the state plans to secure another ₹25,000 crore in defence investments over the next five years.

This fresh investment is expected to generate 20,000–22,000 direct employment opportunities, in addition to thousands of indirect jobs across the defence supply chain.

Officials believe the next phase will attract more global and domestic defence manufacturers, component suppliers, MSMEs, and technology firms.

Strong Progress Already Achieved

Operational Units Begin Manufacturing

The corridor has moved beyond planning and is now witnessing real industrial activity.

Key achievements include:

  • Investment commitments from 189 investors
  • Proposed investments of nearly ₹39,000 crore
  • Potential to generate around 42,000 jobs
  • 64 companies allotted land
  • Grounded investments of around ₹13,486 crore
  • About 15,300 direct jobs expected from grounded projects
  • Nine manufacturing units have already started production
  • Fourteen more units are expected to become operational before March 2027

These milestones demonstrate that the corridor is steadily converting investment commitments into functioning industries.

Anchor Companies Drive Industrial Growth

Major Defence Companies Lead the Ecosystem

The Uttar Pradesh government is focusing on attracting anchor companies that can create a network of suppliers, MSMEs, and ancillary industries.

Some of the leading companies associated with the corridor include:

  • Adani Defence & Aerospace
  • BrahMos Aerospace
  • Bharat Electronics Limited
  • Bharat Dynamics Limited
  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
  • Aerolloy Technologies

These companies manufacture products ranging from missiles and ammunition to aerospace components, radar systems, drones, and electronic warfare equipment.

Six Strategic Nodes Have Different Strengths

Each Cluster Supports a Different Defence Segment

The six nodes have been designed to specialise in different areas of defence manufacturing.

Lucknow

Lucknow is emerging as a centre for missile systems, aerospace engineering, and advanced materials.

Kanpur

Kanpur focuses on ammunition, ballistic protection systems, defence textiles, and missile manufacturing.

Jhansi

Jhansi is developing as a hub for ammunition, explosives, propulsion systems, and heavy defence equipment.

Aligarh

Aligarh is attracting investments in drones, electronic warfare systems, and precision engineering.

Chitrakoot

Chitrakoot is expected to become a centre for radar systems and air defence technologies.

Agra

Agra continues to expand its industrial infrastructure to support future defence manufacturing projects.

Government Policies Accelerate Investment

Ease of Doing Business Supports Defence Manufacturing

Several policy reforms have made Uttar Pradesh attractive for defence companies.

These include:

  • Single-window clearances
  • Industrial land availability
  • Capital subsidies
  • Stamp duty concessions
  • SGST reimbursement
  • Expressway connectivity
  • Dedicated defence manufacturing policies
  • Skilled workforce development

Together, these initiatives reduce project costs and encourage faster implementation.

Boost for Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Reducing Defence Imports

India is working to reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.

The UP Defence Industrial Corridor supports this objective by encouraging domestic production of:

  • Missiles
  • Ammunition
  • Aircraft components
  • Radar systems
  • Armoured equipment
  • Unmanned aerial systems (UAS)
  • Electronic warfare equipment

As production increases, India can strengthen its defence exports while improving national security.

Economic Impact Beyond Defence

Industrial Growth Creates Wider Benefits

The corridor will benefit more than the defence sector.

Its expansion is expected to:

  • Generate large-scale employment
  • Promote MSMEs
  • Develop logistics and warehousing
  • Improve skill development
  • Increase exports
  • Strengthen local manufacturing
  • Boost regional economic growth

Consequently, districts across Bundelkhand and central Uttar Pradesh will witness stronger industrialisation and better economic opportunities.

A Global Defence Manufacturing Hub in the Making

The next five years will be crucial for the UP Defence Industrial Corridor. With another ₹25,000 crore in targeted investments, the state aims to establish itself among India’s leading defence and aerospace manufacturing destinations.

Officials expect more production facilities to become operational, additional global companies to invest, and stronger integration with India’s defence supply chain.

The UP Defence Industrial Corridor has moved from vision to execution. Operational factories, rising investments, expanding industrial infrastructure, and strong government support are transforming Uttar Pradesh into a key defence manufacturing destination.

With a fresh target of ₹25,000 crore in investments and up to 22,000 new direct jobs, the corridor is poised to accelerate industrial growth, strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence production, and contribute significantly to Uttar Pradesh’s ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy.
